“A” Team Riding High

In a period of washed-out matches (none of them at St Boswells CC, thanks to our wonderful ground staff) you might be forgiven for thinking there hasn’t been much going on in the way of senior cricket. While St Boswells 1st XI sit atop East League Division 2 thanks to three home wins, the newly formed St Boswells “A” Team are performing far better than we expected.

In the 2011 season, St Boswells 2nd XI finished the Border Reserve League second to last, in a league of 8 teams. When the Border League was effectively disbanded at the end of 2011 the Border Sunday League came into being. St Boswells affirmed our loyalty to the league by promising to field a stronger team than in previous reserve competitions, and so the “A” Team was born, with a few first team players, a core reserve team including young players moving up the ranks, and a few old lags still with a bit of fuel in the tank.

As a result, there has been an excellent team spirit under the captaincy of Gavin Deans, best demonstrated in the Langholm game on 6th May when we defended an “undefendable” score of 68. Despite losing early on to Gala, and to a very strong Kelso side, we are at the top of the Border Sunday League as of 3rd June. This comes off the back of a strong performance against Hawick & Wilton 1st XI on Sunday, the St Boswells highlights including a chance-riding, but powerful 54 not out by Scott Marshall, and a squeaky-clean 3 for 13 in 8 overs by young Craig “Bubba” Paterson. Both players notably not being first team regulars.
